After a man-made virus failed to reduce the world's overpopulated areas, global leaders would start a new program that would legitimize a new venture in a game show. The game would be broadcast live, where random contestants would be exiled into a concrete jungle, forced to kill each other for their freedom. Viewers would place their bets on who had a chance at survival. Be that as it may...no one survives the game.
Name: Michael Maschka
Place of birth: Augsburg, Bavaria
Black Cat: Who is Michael Maschka?
Michael Maschka: Isn´t that a question that pursues us our whole live? Isn´t man a mystery to himself and to others? Amongst other reasons I paint to get in contact with my subconscious as well as the unconscious side of live in order to find an answer to that question.
B.C.: Could you tell us some more about your art work?
M.M.: What I want is to let the spiritual realities manifested in myth become a sensual experience. This could be called the credo of my artistic work.
B.C.: How do conceptualize your images? Do you draw on memories and dreams or from photographs of events, individuals and locations?
M.M.: The starting point of my work is always a concrete inner experience. In formal terms, my approach is a realistic one; that means that observation and representation of the inner images are executed as precisely as possible and with a scientific exactitude. In fact, every picture is an object of research.
B.C.: What is your most defining characteristic?
M.M.: Every picture reflects a part of my inner life. Sometimes images are haunting me quite a long time. In fact the inner view is always accompanied by a research of symbols and images of the external world that generate the vocabulary of my imagery.
Name : Sarah Joncas
Place of Birth: Hamilton, Ontario.
Black Cat aka Didi: Would you make a list off the top of your head about things you are passionate about:
Sarah Joncas: Painting, first and foremost! But I can be very passionate about all my cultural tastes – in music, movies, art, books… I love the dark and moody, the surreal, things that give me the creeps (though surprisingly don’t care for horror so much. I prefer things more subtle and psychological). I like learning about and seeing animals, I like bones, and so long as their behind glass, I enjoy insects.
B.C.: When did you first discover your creative talents? Could you tell us about some of your work?
S.J.: I’ve always been drawing, since I could hold a pencil. Not even sure I’d call it a discovery, seemed more like a natural incline. However, the process of creating has always been a discovery. Learning things about yourself and what you could do with the arts. My work is always evolving, too. Since I started painting at 16 you can see a growth of change every year, however, there are certain traits that follow through and carry on. It’s obvious that I come from a background with pop cultural influences. I grew up on anime, comics, cartoons and video games and after starting to delve into art history during my high school years, those two worlds seemed to collide for me. I’m not sure I could give a over arching statement to define what my work is about, but for me painting has been a manner of expressing feelings and ideas that concern me, which has resulted in an overall melancholic body of work.
