Name: Michael Maschka
Place of birth: Augsburg, Bavaria
Black Cat: Who is Michael Maschka?
Michael Maschka: Isn´t that a question that pursues us our whole live? Isn´t man a mystery to himself and to others? Amongst other reasons I paint to get in contact with my subconscious as well as the unconscious side of live in order to find an answer to that question.
B.C.: Could you tell us some more about your art work?
M.M.: What I want is to let the spiritual realities manifested in myth become a sensual experience. This could be called the credo of my artistic work.
B.C.: How do conceptualize your images? Do you draw on memories and dreams or from photographs of events, individuals and locations?
M.M.: The starting point of my work is always a concrete inner experience. In formal terms, my approach is a realistic one; that means that observation and representation of the inner images are executed as precisely as possible and with a scientific exactitude. In fact, every picture is an object of research.
B.C.: What is your most defining characteristic?
M.M.: Every picture reflects a part of my inner life. Sometimes images are haunting me quite a long time. In fact the inner view is always accompanied by a research of symbols and images of the external world that generate the vocabulary of my imagery.
B.C.: Some viewers might find your imagery troubling. What is your reaction to such responses?
M.M.: I´m trying to avoid a direct dark touch and frightening side of the spiritual world though I know that many people are fascinated by it. According to ancient thinking I believe that beauty is still strongly linked with truth and goodness. So I prefer to focus on beauty to create and to keep a balance in a world dominated by hatred and violence.
B.C.: What is the most important idea, issue, dilemma or thing that you want to address in your art?
M.M.: I always believed that there is a spiritual world behind the world of phenomena and the primary duty of the artist is to build a bridge between these two worlds.
B.C.: What’s your favorite creations?... and why?
M.M.: My latest project or creation is always my favourite.
B.C.: What else are you interested in besides visual arts?
M.M.: Good books, good food, good wine…
B.C.: What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years of your life?
M.M.: There are many ideas I hope to realize or to accomplish within the next five years. Like any other creative person I live on the dream of a better world and that one day my visions would come true.
B.C.: Thanks Michael for this interview, I enjoyed getting to know the man behind the art.
