Didi: Thanks for speaking with us Jason. Can you first just give us a quick rundown on who you are and your history in film?
Jason Fité: I originally started my creative life as a novelist and then, about fifteen years ago, I started writing screenplays, and from there expanded into producing and directing. So now I juggle writing, directing and producing and very occassionally, acting.

Didi: Do you have any directorial influences?
Jason Fité: Lots! - Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, David Lynch, Hitchcock, Peter Weir, Ridley Scott, Ingmar Bergman, Sergio Leone, Coppola, David Lean, Kurosawa

Didi: What would you say was the inception or inspiration for the story of Daemon Mind?
Jason Fité: To me the most terrifying thing has always been the monsters that exist in the human mind or imagination, and I wanted to explore the possibilities of them coming ‘alive’. I have also always been fascinated by the concept that there exist multiple realities or worlds which we only rarely glimpse, so I wanted to develop a story where a scientist is able to explore these other worlds and show the consequences of interacting with these realms of the unknown.
A great inspiration and resource was a very fascinating book, ‘The Daemon’ by Anthony Peake. It terms of the plot and the main character’s (Sarah) story Aeschylus’ Oresteia was a major influence in the way it explores the themes of revenge, justice and redemption. Both books can be briefly glimpsed in the film.

Didi: On the making of Daemon Mind, were there any major complications you ran into during filming?
Jason Fité: We were filming during the Covid crisis and in between two lockdowns so there was always the threat that we would have to close down production at any moment. So, we did feel like we were constantly walking on a razors edge. However, this did add an extra sense of urgency to the filming which I believed actually helped greatly.

Didi: Are you a big fan of the genre? Do you consider it an effective place of entry for indie directors, or feel it’s more suited to those with a great love of the genre?
Jason Fité: Yes, I have always been a great fan of horror films, especially those which contain a strong psychological or paranormal element. For alot of directors their first chance to direct comes from working on a horror and it can often establish them as a name to watch, but I would also say that if you are going to make a film, make the one you are most passionate about regardless of genre.

Sarah Acha Jessica JasmineDidi: What’s the biggest difficulty in being an indie horror director? Does it come in shooting, getting locations, keeping cast and crew invested?
Jason Fité: I think it’s in creating a structure and momentum which allows you to make the film you are passionate about. Being an independent gives you a great deal of freedom to pursue your own vision but also means you can be limited in terms of not having the resources bigger studios have available to them. On Daemon Mind we were really fortunate in that we had a crew and cast who were really committed to the project.

Didi: Would you like to share some final words on “through a dark mirror”?
Jason Fité: I am currently developing a sequel entitled ‘Revelations 2050’ which is set in a post apocalyptic world and in which many of the mysteries in ‘through a dark mirror’ are explained. The films are part of a much bigger ‘universe’ for a mythical/historical series we are creating called ‘The Heroes’. The project is the most ambitious one I have attempted as it involves ten-thousand years of human history. It should keep me very busy for the next few years!

Didi: What particular scene can horror fans look forward to?
Jason Fité: My particular favourite is when one of the ‘victims’ gets to see her evil Daemon.

Didi: What’s next for you? Another horror or a chiller or something different?
Jason Fité: I am in development/pre-production for several projects – a mystery/horror anthology (Nocturnes), a time-travel romance (1914 – An Adventure in Time), a Hollywood biopic (The Misadventures of Errol Flynn), a sequel to ‘through a dark mirror’ (Revelations 2050) and… fingers crossed, a sequel to Daemon Mind.

Didi: What is your biggest fear?
Jason Fité: I have a few odd phobias which no one must ever know about!

Huge thank you to Jason Fité
